Have you ever been told you need to focus on work-life balance? That you need to keep your personal life at home and your work life at work?
Here’s the punchline: work-life balance is a bunch of BS.
Unless you’re in the show Severance (please go check it out if you haven’t already!), we can’t actually separate home from work.
If you’re worried about your dog being home alone for too long, or your babysitter flakes, or your basement flooded, it’s going to impact how you show up at work. Likewise, if you’re stressed or burned out from work, it’s going to leak into your home life.
So instead of blaming yourself for not being able to manage the time required to juggle home and work life, aim for work-life alignment.
Where work-life balance is a matter of time management and compartmentalization, work-life alignment is a matter of authenticity, values, passion, and purpose.

Authentic Alignment
When you’re authentically aligned, not only do your days get easier, but you’ll also draw in clients who share your values, create trust, communicate in a way that feels natural, and get rid of anything that has an “ick” factor.
We’re talking about alignment between:
What you say and what you mean
How you talk and how you act
Your website and social
You and your team
Your personal values and your company values
Values-Forward Business
Your company values are a foundational element of your brand. Not only do your values serve as a guide for day-to-day actions and decision-making, they can also lead to loyal customers/clients and contribute to business growth.
As a business owner, your company values will likely have some overlap with your personal core values, which is great because it likely means you have some alignment! Keep in mind though that your company values need to take your audience/clients/patients into account.
Passion and Purpose
Work is never going to be fulfilling 100% of the time. In fact, some days you’ll just have to eat a shit sandwich. But running a business that touches your personal passion and purpose will support your work-life alignment.
Somatic Attunement
Your body is super smart. When something in your body feels bad, take time to listen and see what it might be trying to tell you. Common somatic “signs” include:
Stomach aches
Nausea
Headaches
Generally feeling “gross”
Fatigue
You’re Not Alone
As a driven, ambitious expert in your field, you’re able to do anything you set your mind to. You can care for your clients/patients, build a social media following, learn how to make a website, do your own marketing, network like a boss, and figure out a solution to any surprises that are thrown your way.
Here’s the deal though: You don’t have to do it all alone. Just because it’s possible for you to run every aspect of your business doesn’t mean you should.
What are you sacrificing in order to be all the roles in your business? What parts of life are you underfeeding or neglecting? Who in your life wishes they got to spend more time with you? What other passions are you giving up to do it all at work?
